Controlling Legionella

The health and safety executive has highlighted the threat of Legionella on a recent publication. Particular attention was made to the risk in nursing, residential and care homes. The main risk was to elderly people with weakened immune systems. The potential cause is the development of Legionella, the bacteria that can cause Legionnaires Disease in the water systems. The two areas singled out for hazard analysis are shower heads and hot water systems.
Cleaning and disinfection should form part of site maintenance in nursing homes, care homes and hospitals.

To ultimately eliminate the risk from Legionella, as in all cleaning and sanitising operations, it is imperative to remove contamination and then to kill remaining bacteria.

Scale – Before you can sanitise you need to clean and descale the surfaces. Soak the shower heads and tap fittings in a solution of PHOS or STC to rapidly remove the scale.

Sanitising – Once the surface is clean you need to disinfect and sanitise by soaking shower heads and tap fittings in a solution of TRIO 100 which is proven against Legionella. Dilute TRIO 100 at a 1% solution and allow a 30 minute contact time. Rinse and re-assemble.

N.B. This process should be carried out a minimum of 3 times per year.
